Sick Flynn

Sick Flynn – Artist: Derrick Douglass

Many know that I have numerous interests. Currently, I am a student at Montgomery College studying Graphic Design. Additionally, I am developing my artistic skills and abilities when I’m not remixing or repurposing.

Last semester, I as introduced to Adobe CS5.5 Illustrator. Now I have a new way of expressing my artistic self.

My latest project is entitled, “Sick Flynn.” Sick Flynn brings together the tough, gritty, beauty of the funki urban ecosystem with the futuristic, organic and linear lines of tomorrow’s machine and man. I created all but one image. The concept borrows a bit from my love of the movie Tron. I still love the light cycles.

I hope you enjoy me piece

Like me, some of you are accused of being cheap. Ironically, friends, families and associates believe we are cheap, we believe we are frugal, trying to stretch our dollars as far as they can go. Over 30% of my apartment is fashionably decorated with found objects, thrift store finds and dumpster dived treasures.

I am never surprised when others attempt to force their beliefs on me. I consistently feel pressure to conform in every major aspect of my life. From the way I dress, spend my money, purchase goods to television viewing there is pressure to follow a prescribed pathway.

Left of Center

Left of Center

Interestingly, artists, by our nature are a bit left of center (sorry for the cliché’). It is our responsibility to challenge common beliefs, to ask tough questions and to view the world from a different point of view. We shouldn’t be different for the simple sake of being different. We have a duty to look at the world from our unique perspective to improve our communities, help others, introduce new ideas and introduce better ways of doing stuff. The list goes on and on.

The next time, you are chastised for being a little different from the pack; remember that lone wolf artists like you help the rest to see the world in a unique and special way. It is OK to be a bit different.

I love this project. Doesn’t it look great. At that time I lived in Columbia, SC and I purchased the wire people local Goodwill. They each cost about one dollar. Eventually, I moved and took them along with me.

When I moved back to Atlanta, GA, I purchased a KEWL solid wood picture from my local Goodwill. One day I decided to put the items together along with material I purchased from Hobby Lobby hobby stores.

The steps were simple but required patience and dexterity. First, I glued both halves of the fabric onto backer board. Second, I sewed the piece that was glued between both halves of the fabric. Lastly, I used small metal pieces to secure the wire people to the final piece. It is a tricky project, but an enjoyable one

Jumal Can Do ‘Everything

by Derrick Douglass

Jan 19.2012

A few months ago, during a business trip to Pittsburgh, my wife rode hailed a cab to transport her to her hotel room.  Unsprisingly, her driver, Jumal, was an affible fellow. During their conversation, the cabbie proudly stated that he was an entrepreneur. He waxed poetically about his business prowess and success. Furthermore, he professed that he was brokering a deal that as soon as it paid off, he’d jettison his nacent taxi career (a petty job he’d taken between deals).

Jumal, sensing that my wife could a potential customer leaned in a started his sales pitch. Apperently, Jumal not only sold perfume and pocketbooks, but also sold real estate and amazingly credit repair services. Boy! Jumal can do everything. I would not be surprised if he hasn’t since added accounting, beauty and animal husbandry services to his business model.

Like Jumal’s offerings, I too have been guilty of trying to add artistic skills to my tool kit that I have no business trying to add. I tried glass blowing. At best, my results were mixed. I tried painting (not houses); a dismal failure. These are a few examples. I could go on and on.

You should doggedly pursue artistic expressions you are passionate about that match your skills and abilities. Work your darndest (ok so this isn’t a real word!) to do what everything takes to grow in this area. Don’t get me wrong. Try as many art forms as you can. There are great skills you can learn from other art forms that can improve or add dimension to your primary artistic expression. But you go into it knowing that there is a good chance that all you learn is to have fun, do something that interests you and add a small skill to your toolkit.

Don’t be like Jumal!

Funki Christmas Wrapping - thriftstoreremix

The gifts we give at Christmas reflects our  generosity, for it has been said that is better to give than receive.  OK! I’ll go with that.

Conformity is the bane of my existence. I can’t do anything today without adding some flavor to it. I can’t even give out simple gifts anymore.

This Christmas is no different. I believe that the gift and its wrapping should express creativity and originality.

I created a Piet Mondrian inspired wrapping paper.  First, the gift was wrapped in plain brown paper.  Second, pastels were used to create the street inspired De Stijl Gift

I hope my bride loves the gift.

A Christmas Wish

by Derrick Douglass

Dec 24, 2011

To enjoy Christmas, is like a Hershey chocolate bar, one never outgrow the warm feeling it creates. But, as ones steps slow and time engenders caution, the holiday becomes a bit more nuanced than the holiday of years gone by. Unfortunately, debts, careers and many other of life’s issues encroach upon everything, even Christmas.

Thankfully, most of us are blessed. Therefore, when asked what I want for Christmas my reply is simple harmony and peace. I have a happy loving bride, family and friends.  Moreover, I have good health and a roof over my head. Don’t get me wrong, gifts are great.  I do have a 14.4 volt, high-speed, Milwaukee branded cordless drill somewhere way down on my list.

But, like most, I desire peace and love toward my fellow man. I’d love to have less poverty in the world and folks to care about the environment.  I’d love to see those who desire education to get it.

So this Christmas, smile, have fun, pray for a better world and enjoy the cranberry sauce!

Merry Christmas!
