Atlanta Dogwood Festival – 2010
by Derrick Douglass
Though Philly is my hometown, the three years I’ve lived in Atlanta has been fun. The first two years I was luck to live one mile from Atlanta’s famed Piedmont Park. I love to run, walk or chill in the world’s most fabulous park.
Thankfully, every year, Piedmont Park hosts the annual Dogwood Festival. Atlanta is affectionately known as “City in a forest.” My city has tons of beautiful trees. The Dogwood Festival celebrates Atlanta’s blooming Dogwood trees. If you ask me, it simply a reason to celebrate spring and to have a great day in the park.
Bring your appetite. The are food vendors who serve a many types of inexpensive, yet delicious foods. You can get a gyro, a fried fish sandwich or fresh delicious lemonade. There is so much to choose from. I’m watching my weight. So some foods I save for special occasions. Yesterday, I purchased funnel cake. Hmm!. I was so good.
The kids will have a blast. There is a an amusement section. For a fee, kids can ride a train, jump in that air thing they love or get their faces painted. The kids all had smiles on their faces. I could tell all of them were having a blast.
The art. Now here is one of the main reasons I attend the event. There are over 100 artists and vendors showcasing their wares. You can find almost everything at the festival. Salvage artists, Wood Workers, Painters, Jewelry Makers and so on. The list is boundless.
I love taking a leisurely pace to breathe in everything – there is so much to take in. The works are amazing. I use the show as an opportunity to learn new techniques to add to my tool kit. Also, I enjoy meeting the artists and discussing their crate.
Yesterday I met artists Tracey Lewis
(www.traceylewisart.com), Margaret Taylor
(www.drydancing.com), Stacey Brown (www.sbrownart.com) and Ronnie Phillips
(www.RonPhillipsArt.com). Each artist has a interesting artistic perspective. My only complaint is that I didn’t have dime to purchase from these artists.
It is a great “artistic” event. Pack up the spouse and kids and great read for a fun day in the park.
